Spinning Bee - May 22, 2005

A re-enactment of the spinning bee's of the 1760s will be held on Sunday, May 15th, from 1-3 pm. at the Garrison House.  It will feature both historic and modern spinners with spinning contests, a small selection of vendors, and 18th century activities.

Spinning Bee's were held in early America to encourage the home production of yarn.  In the 1760's spinning bees became more political as they were held to protest the importation of British goods, which were now being more heavily taxed.

Modern spinners and their wheels are very welcome. This is a chance for the public to see that spinning isn't just something people "used" to do but is a vital craft today.
